FISHING ASSOCIATION'S WARNING: Danube polluted with feces, appeal on swimmers, advisory on fish consumption!
Because of the prolonged and strong heatwave that has caused a drastic drop in the water level, the Fishing Association of Vojvodina (RSV DOO) has issued an important public service announcement. The level of the Danube is so low that some the sewage inflows are now above the water level, which has led to a serious deterioration in water quality, with most beaches and swimming spots now categorized as fourth class (low ecological status).
Although the Association is not a direct steward of any part of the Danube, the seriousness of the situation made them decide to warn all citizens, including fishermen, about potential dangers. The situation on the ground is also illustrated by the photos taken last weekend on the stretch between Begec and Glozan.
Fecal pollution: Sensitive groups in danger
Citing data from the Institute of Public Health of Vojvodina, the Association notes that the number of microorganisms is currently within the permitted limits, but that indicators of fresh fecal pollution dominate reports.
This poses a serious risk, especially for sensitive groups including children and the elderly, pregnant women, chronically ill patients, as well as those with open wounds or active skin diseases.
Contaminated water can cause diseases of the digestive tract (upset stomach, nausea, fever), problems with the respiratory system (coughing, sneezing, difficulty breathing), as well as serious irritation or infection of the skin, eyes, external ear canal, and of any existing cuts.
Emergency rules for swimmers and boat owners
For all those who, despite the warnings, decide to spend time on the river, the Fishing Association of Vojvodina has issued strict guidelines. After swimming in the Danube, a thorough shower with clean water is necessary each time.
When swimming, make sure not to swallow water. Persons spending extended amount of time on pontoons and boats must never use the Danube water for personal hygiene, washing dishes or washing food.
Do not eat fish!
High water temperatures have created ideal conditions for massive reproduction of algae and an increase of organic matter, which directly leads to a decrease of the oxygen level in the water.
Due to these extremely unfavorable biological conditions, the Fishing Association of Vojvodina's strict recommendation is not to consume the fish you catch!
Fishermen are advised to switch exclusively to the "catch and release" sport fishing method during this period, and are appealed on to show solidarity and find positive sides even in such difficult environmental conditions. The association will continue to regularly monitor the condition of the waters and inform the public about all changes in a timely manner.
