Vucic: Serbia will defend the country, territorial integrity, and UN Charter

President of Serbia Aleksandar Vucic addressed the General Debate of the 81st UN General Assembly late last night Serbian time, to say that for ten years he has faced all possible kinds of pressure in order to abandon the full implementation of the Brussels agreement, which was confirmed by the signature of the EU, and at the same time said that Serbia will defend its country, territorial integrity, the UN Charter, and UN Security Council Resolution 1244.

Vucic said that for four and a half years he has been lectured about many in the West being the remaining beacon of democracy in the world, protectors not only of Ukraine, but of the rules and principles of international law.

"And when they raise their voice, thinking that they are very ethical, and that their views are the only correct ones, we just smile and ask - so how did you treat the issue of Kosovo and Metohija and the territorial integrity of Serbia, which is guaranteed by the UN Charter and UN Security Council Resolution 1244?"

There is either no answer to that, or, with supposedly good intentins, they tell us and advise us "not to look to the past, but to the future."

"When we ask them, 'Are you also telling Ukraine that the territories they are fighting for are not important?', the meaningless conversation is interrupted, and we move on to another topic. And I want to warn you all. All of you here who belong to the Global South. All the agreements you sign with great powers - watch your back," Vucic said.

He recalled that the Brussels agreement was signed in 2012, in order solve the problems between Serbs and Albanians in Kosovo and Metohija through a compromise, and that all the obligations that Serbia undertook have been fulfilled, while the only one that the Albanians (Pristina) had, to form the Community of Serb Municipalities, has not been fulfilled to this day.

"It's interesting that the agreement was accepted, not only in the presence but also confirmed by the signature of the EU, but that did not help," said Vucic.

He pointed out that as the president of Serbia, for ten years he has faced every possible trick and pressure in order to abandon the full implementation of what was signed.

"This is a lesson to us Serbs, but also to everyone else in the world who wants to protect and preserve their country. Serbia will defend its country, its territorial integrity, the UN Charter, and UN Security Council Resolution 1244," said Vucic.

The president thanked each of the 107 countries that did not recognize the unilaterally declared independence of so-called Kosovo.

"We know that many of those countries were exposed to pressure and we know that maintaining a principled position is sometimes much more difficult than it looks from the outside. Thank you for your consistency in not recognizing a part of Serbia's territory as independent," Vucic said.
