The Montenegrin police have arrested the young man on suspicion that he committed the crime of causing ethnic, racial and religious hatred.

He is suspected of committing the crime by posting "inappropriate" photos and content on Facebook, related to a monument to people's hero Ljubo Cupic, located in Niksic.

A.M. posted the contentious content in question on October 20 on the social network Facebook, which, the police said, "caused disturbance among Niksic citizens."

The police statement did not describe the content that resulted in the arrest, but some Podgorica-based websites published a photo of the Facebook post showing a young man pointing two fingers at the monument to Cupic, as if he were firing from a gun at the people's hero's monument.

"We killed you once, we will kill you again. We will kill you again and again, until the Serb lands and the Serb people are free from your devil spirit and the venom of communism," the caption to that photo read.

Ljubo Cupic was captured in Niksic in 1942 while fighting against Italians and Chetniks, and was later executed.

His victorious smile at the execution site while handcuffed was captured by the camera of an Italian major. That photograph has been seen around the world, symbolizing anti-fascism.

The monument to Cupic was erected in 2018 in the central town square in Niksic.
