Special prosecution in Pristina launches investigation into construction of new bridges over Ibar River

The special prosecutor's office in Pristina has launched an investigation into the contracts for the construction of new bridges over the Ibar River in Kosovska Mitrovica, due to suspicions about misuse of public funds, Pristina-based Koha has reported.
The media outlet was told by the prosecutor's office that it does not have the authority to evaluate or approve infrastructure projects, but acts when there are doubts about misuse of public funds.
They also stated that they are currently processing almost 2,000 contracts from one source and that they have ordered the so-called Kosovo police to undertake the necessary investigative actions.
On July 1, acting Prime Minister of Pristina's provisional institutions Albin Kurti laid the foundation stone for the construction of two bridges over the Ibar River in Kosovska Mitrovica, near the main bridge, which is closed to traffic and where KFOR is permanently deployed to ensure security.
Citizens in northern Kosovska Mitrovica say that new bridges on the Ibar River are not needed, because they would not be connecting, but instead contributing to raising tensions and jeopardizing the security of Serbs in the north of Kosovo.
The Serb List launched a petition against the construction of new bridges, and announced that the signatures will be handed over to representatives of the international community.
