Vucic criticizes LA Galaxy: It's not peak democracy to fire a footballer because of his wife

President of Serbia Aleksandar Vucic says that it would be tantamount to a scandal if a football player was fired in Serbia because of something his wife had said.

"I don't think it's peak of democracy is to fire a football player not because he plays badly, but because his wife writes something somewhere. Imagine that happening in our country, it would be a scandal of planetary proportions. Excuse me for siding with our citizen. I felt the need to protect, not only a footballer, but the right to work of one of our people," Vucic said, commenting on the case of Aleksandar Katai as he was visiting Nis for the opening of the Science and Technology Park.

Katai recently, not of his own volition, came into the public spotlight after his wife Tea made a series of horrific racist statements on Instagram, amid protests by African Americans and their struggle for their rights.

Black Americans were spurred by the murder of George Floyd, who was suffocated during his arrest by a white police officer, Derek Chovin.

Tea Katai called the protesting Blacks "sh*ts"  and called for the killing of some of them. The football player apologized for his wife's controversial views, but the Los Angeles Galaxy decided to part ways with him.

Vucic does not think that Katai's wife's attitudes are his fault and he doesn't think Katai should suffer because of them

"Even if she ran someone over in a car accident, punish her, what does that have to do with her husband," said Vucic.
