The Special Court in Belgrade today found Darko Saric guilty of "money laundering" from the sale of drugs and sentenced him to 9 years in prison.

Saric did not want to come to the sentencing.

Darko Saric and his associates were put on trial based on an indictment that said they had "laundered" more than 20 million euros of dirty money, which is believed to had been acquired through cocaine smuggling.

In its closing arguments at the previous hearing, the prosecution asked the court to sentence Saric and others to maximum prison sentences for the crimes they are charged with, while Saric and the other defendants sought acquittal.

The criminal offense of money laundering, for which Saric and others have been charged, is punishable by up to 12 years in prison. Creating a joint criminal enterprise carries with it a sentence of five years.

In a separate trial for organizing a cocaine smuggling group, Saric was sentenced to 15 years in prison in December 2018, and now the decision of the Appellate Court is awaited in that case.
