More than 100 sites with archaeological content from the Neolithic to the Middle Ages have been discovered in the territory of Dolovo, near Pancevo, northeast of Belgrade. In recent years, with the support of the Ministry of Culture, the site Ciglana has been systematically explored, where three layers with settlements from the times of antiquity have been discovered.

The oldest settlement on this site dates from the second century AD and belongs to the Dacians who clashed with the Romans. That era and events are described in the famous Hollywood hit "Gladiator."

The second horizon of the settlement belongs to the second half of the 3rd and 4th centuries, when the composition of the population changed, the majority of whom were now Sarmatians, but the presence of Slavs, originally from Russia of the time, is also clear, according to RTV.

"Judging by the findings of material culture, in Russia that culture is well studied, well known, it is mentioned as the Kiev culture. Elements of that culture seem to have arrived here as well. It is a mixed population. It is not a purely Slavic population, let's be clear. There is also Sarmatians," says Vojislav Djordjevic, archaeologist in the National Museum in Pancevo.

The last ancient settlement was formed at the end of the 4th century and coincides with the beginning of the migration of people, followed by a lull until the 8th century.

"In the Middle Ages, Slavs settled here, in the 8th and 9th centuries. There are traces of settlements from that period. And that settlement, as I mentioned, lasts until the 13th century," says Djordjevic.

Circular dugouts with separate food pantries have been discovered at the Ciglana site, with large kilns made of baked earth and remains of ramparts. All the houses had the same inventory.

"Each house had two pithos, one bowl, two pots, which means practical furniture from that period. What is interesting, we also follow trade relations of this population with the Roman Empire. In particular, an ancient settlement means the presence of Roman objects. It means that they performed, they had certain connections and contacts with the Empire, which was practically there, some 40 kilometers away, since the Danube was the border," says Djordjevic.

Two years ago, a Sarmatian necropolis was found. Four graves were excavated, one of which has rich jewelry and costumes. Exploration will continue next year.
