Regardless of how old a person is, when their mother dies, a part of their soul goes with her, and the wound is even bigger if they fail to say theirlast goodbye. This is exactly the fate that befell State Secretary in the Ministry of Health Dr. Mirsad Djerlek (53), in the midst of the fight against coronavirus. Dr. Djerlek tells Objektiv that he blames himself for his mother's death, because he personally transmitted the virus to her while he still didn't know he was infected.

"The saddest event that happened to me during the pandemic was the death of my mother and the day I lost her to coronavirus. What hurts the most is that I didn't manage to see her. At my own risk, I left the Infectious Diseases Clinic when they told me that they were transporting her to the Clinical Center Kragujevac. However, we passed each other by, she entered the red zone and there our paths diverged forever. I am still under the impression that I killed her," says Dr. Djerlek.

"I brought coronavirus into the family, even though I knew that my mother belonged to a risk group. I was supposed to isolate myself, but she wouldn't understand that. She would have told me, 'You got caught up in that hospital of yours, you won't come to see me.' As for the happy moments, it was definitely the birth of my grandson Kan," he adds.

Asked if he knows how he got infected, he said:

" In June, I became infected at the stroke unit in Novi Pazar. I can't make a claim, but it is evident that the patient we were resuscitating had coronavirus. I didn’t think about myself at the time. We were close, 20 centimeters, without protective gear. Since it's been a few months since I contracted the virus, I have to admit I get tired and my concentration is not what it used to be."
