Dr. Ana Gligic for Telegraf: Can vaccinated people transmit virus, and how long antibodies last

Gligic believes that the vaccine against coronavirus should be received by those who have already healed from Covid-19, having had a mild clinical picture

"Persons who have received the vaccine against coronavirus cannot be asymptomatic carriers, nor can they transmit the virus to those who have not been vaccinated," virologist Ana Gligic has told Telegraf.

She stresses that the task of the vaccine is to create antibodies and strengthen immunity. She also reminds that there is a longer road towards creating antibodies - getting infected with coronavirus, but in that case, antibodies are produced more slowly, even in people who do not have any symptoms of infection.

"If you already have coronavirus, it takes the body 10 to 14 days to create antibodies that will eliminate the virus from the body. The body begins to produce antibodies on the 7th day, on the 14th day they reach a high level, and then they continue to grow until the 27th day. After a while, the level of antibodies starts to decrease a little, but that level soon stabilizes and then lasts for several months," Gligic stresses.

Whether antibodies not derived from vaccines will last longer depends on the condition of an organism, she explains for Telegraf.

Covid-19 is known to be a multi-system disease - it enters through the respiratory tract, but then also spreads to other organs. Asked whether, if we received the Covid-19 vaccine, it can affect the development of other diseases in the body as happens now, virologist Gligic said:

"No vaccine protects 100 percent. The coronavirus vaccine will ensure that we do not get to hospitalized; even if we 'pick up' the virus somewhere, we will get over it 'on our feet', and we may not even know that we had it. Infection after vaccination increases the immune status of the organism and will not harm us, we will not end up on a ventilator, nothing bad will happen to us. Coronavirus no longer acts on other organs."

Gligic recalls that coronavirus first multiplies at the point of entry, and then "descends" to the lungs. Through the blood and lymph it "goes" to other organs.

"If the virus does not have an affinity for the cells of other organs, it will not be accepted there. If the organism is strong, the virus will not 'go' to the liver, spleen and other organs," our interlocutor states.

Gligic believes that the vaccine against coronavirus virus should also be given to those who have already overcome Covid-19 with a mild clinical picture, in order to strengthen immunity and create an additional amount of antibodies.

"Without the vaccine, the end of the pandemic is not in sight," recalls this internationally recognized virologist.

"But, in order to create collective immunity, it's s necessary for a large number of people to be vaccinated as soon as possible. At the time of smallpox, 18 million people were vaccinated in 15 days, and a 'wall' was built. Now, due to the situation with the vaccines, immunization is being carried out partially, not only in our country, but all over the world. But it's important that people get vaccinated so that they do not risk their health."
