"The system is overburdened, patients from across Serbia to be transferred to the Krusevac hospital"

"We've had to engage additional capacities," Dr. Goran Stevanovic pointed out

Minister of Health Zlatibor Loncar held a meeting today with all directors of Covid hospitals in Serbia, and afterwards, the director of the Infectious Diseases Clinic of the Clinical Center of Serbia (KCS), Dr. Goran Stevanovic, addressed the public.

He said that a part of the population does not accept wearing masks, getting vaccinated, or distancing.

"Once they get sick, then that becomes the biggest problem is existence (for them) - but we must understand that some things about our health are our own responsibility. The system has been really overburdened during this past year. It's not all about Covid, we must treat non-Covid patients as well," he pointed out.

He added that everyone must take a small step to help their loved ones, themselves and healthcare workers - by refraining from all unnecessary contacts, but above all, by getting vaccinated.

"We had to engage additional capacities in hospitals in Belgrade today because we have a larger number of admissions. Patients from Belgrade, but also from other towns, will be sent to the Krusevac hospital for further treatment," said Dr. Stevanovic.

He pointed out that further decisions would be made in the coming days.

"The goal is to preserve the capacities of the non-Covid system. We will do the best we can, but please try to be even more responsible and I apologize for constantly warning you. I thank everyone who got vaccinated and who respects the measures. I ask those who are vaccinated to understand that complete immunity develops only two weeks after receiving the second dose of the vaccine," the doctor pointed out.

He added that the highest number of hospitalized (Covid) patients was recorded in December 2020 - about 11,000 people were in hospitals throughout Serbia then.
