Deputy Mayor Goran Vesic and Assistant Mayor Andreja Mladenovic today laid wreaths in the yard of Vaznesenjska (Ascension) Church in Belgrade in memory of the victims of April 6, 1941.

Mladenovic pointed out that April 6 is one of the saddest days in the history of Belgrade.

"Between 2,500 and 4,000 people died in the bombing, which is a large number considering that Belgrade at the time had slightly over 300,000 residents. More than 1,000 buildings were completely destroyed, including the National Library in Kosancicev Venac, while about 10,000 buildings were damaged," Mladenovic pointed out.

He reminded that a large number of Belgraders died in the yard of this church, where a bomb shelter was hit.

"This black day represented direct revenge of Nazi Germany and Adolf Hitler. Belgrade has been bombed several times in its history, it has endured everything and rebuilt itself ," Mladenovic stressed and announced that a chapel would be built and dedicated to the victims who died at Vaznesenjska Church.
