Black statistic: Most traffic accidents happen in July, over 200 people die since beginning of 2021

The vacation season has begun, and with it the season of traffic jams at border crossings. In the past few days, several fatal traffic accidents have been reported. Vladimir Vida from the Traffic Police Administration told RTS that the highest number of traffic accidents happens during July.

Vladimir Vida said that there was most traffic during the past weekend on the busiest roads, primarily on highways where a larger number of vehicles was noticeable, especially with foreign lincense plates.

He said that two serious traffic accidents happened last night - in Krusevac, where a motorcyclist was killed, and in Pirot were a pedestrian died on a highway.

Speaking about traffic accident statistics, Vladimir Vida said that since the beginning of the year, there have been 16,500 in which 214 people lost their lives - five less than in last year.

"Statistics from previous years show that there are more accidents in the summer months. Those getting on the road should depart rested and take breaks," Vida explained.

He stressed that fatigue has been shown to be one of the biggest causes of tragedies, especially on highways.

Vida also said that over 18,000 drivers have been excluded from traffic since the beginning of the year for driving under the influence of alcohol, while about 800 were under the influence of narcotics.

He added that more drivers under the influence of psychoactive substances have been discovered since the beginning of the year than during the entire last year.

Vida also invited organizers of student excursions to report ahead of time so that the police can check the technical condition of vehicles, as well as drivers. He said that there have been cases when this was not done.

Vladimir Vida from the Traffic Police Administration concluded that the traffic police have strengthened the control on highways. He appealed on drivers to make sure they are using seat belts.
