Not only is it the longest canyon in eastern Serbia, but Lazar's Canyon is also considered the deepest in that part of our country. It is located a few kilometers from the village of Zlot, near Bor.

Due to the characteristics of the terrain, as well as the fact that it is known for its vertical cliffs, this landscape of incredible beauty has not been sufficiently explored to this day.

However, that is not preventing adventurers and mountaineers from setting out on hikes in Lazar's Canyon.

Who was Lazar after whom the canyon takes its name?

Apart from the canyon, there is also a cave of the same name, which was in 1949 characterized as a natural monument and is under protection. It was declared an object of the Republic of Serbia's geo-heritage in 2005. Lazar's Cave is one of the biggest sights in the canyon. Both are named after the Serbian medieval ruler, Czar Lazar.

Namely, it is believed that after the Battle of Maritsa, in 1371, Serbian warriors stopped to rest in this area. They were the cavalry of the Serbian ruler after whom the canyon and the cave are named.

There are also indications that hajduks from that area were hiding from Turkish persecutors in the canyon. Since it was even more inaccessible at the time, as soon as they stepped into the area of Lazar's Canyon, they were safe.

To Lazar's Canyon

Recently, a group of people from Kraljevo set out on an endeavor to get to know the beauties of Lazar's Canyon. Just like when Sanja Stevanovic and her friends decided to go for the Vidovdan night climb on Mt. Rtanj, this time they came up with the idea spontaneously.

"We went to Lazar's Canyon without a guide and we managed well," Sanja Stevanovic tells Telegraf.

"There were sections with rockslides, so we passed through there with a little more difficulty. But it paid off. The three buddies and I only realized how well we fared once we came out of the canyon, given the horned vipers, rockslides, and the magnetic anomaly."

Truth be told, during this interesting journey, they only saw two snakes, although the area of Lazar's Canyon is considered to be the largest habitat of horned vipers in our country. But, fortunately, the team that set out to explore Lazar's Canyon did not face any unpleasant situations on that front.

Despite the so-called Zlot geomagnetic anomaly, for which the area is known, Sanja and her friends did not feel any changes.

The Zlot geomagnetic anomaly is characteristic of the area of Mt. Rtanj, which is located about 20 kilometers from Lazar's Canyon. It is a geomagnetic anomaly, which, due to its extremely strong magnetism, interferes with the north-south magnetic flux. What's interesting is that the area is impossible to spy on because of the anomaly, its natural protection. One of the most famous geomagnetic anomalies is the Brazilian one, which extends to the Atlantic Ocean, and the famous Bermuda Triangle.

"By the very fact it is insufficiently explored, Lazar's Canyon thrilled me. It looks powerful and is different from everything I have had the opportunity to see so far. Pristine nature, caves and hundred-year-old trees in the canyon seem scary and fascinating at the same time," Sanja concludes.
