Brnabic: This is not the worst Covid situation. Measures can't be the same when you have the vaccine

Prime Minister Ana Brnabic has told RTS that Covid measures cannot be the same when you have the vaccine at your disposal, and when you don't - "because that effectively means that you do not believe in the vaccine."

She assessed that this is not the most difficult epidemiologist situation Serbia has been facing, regardless of the fact that the number of new cases was the highest on September 29.

"Thanks to vaccination, we don't have the most difficult epidemiological situation in hospitals with these numbers. We had many more hospitalized people back then. We see the effect of vaccination," said the prime minister.

Brnabic explained that the pandemic will end in one of two ways.

"We must talk about personal responsibility, civic solidarity, the need to get vaccinated, because the pandemic will stop either when we achieve collective immunity as we all get infected or when we all get vaccinated. So, one of those two," the prime minister said.

Asked why no new measures were adopted during the meeting of the Crisis HQ earlier this week, she said that if that happened, everyone would be talking about restrictive measures, whether cafes close at 5 pm, and as soon as the measures would get relaxed, the number of new cases would rise again, and there would once again be a problem in hospitals.

"Today we are talking only and exclusively about vaccination, because vaccination is the only salvation. It is a medicine that we have, a great advantage in relation to how things had been during previous waves," Brnabic stressed.

She announced that videos promoting vaccination will start to be shown again on all television stations that have a national frequency.

"Yesterday, the City of Belgrade launched another vaccination campaign. We have to talk about these things in order to show that vaccination really works and that we have good examples to follow," Brnabic remarked.

As for the possible introduction of mandatory vaccination of healthcare workers, she stressed that she looked at the statistics and that she can and wants to talk about what is possible in real life.

"I don't want to talk about measures that are of a marketing nature, just to make them sound nice," the prime minister pointed out.

"There are currently three vaccination drives for health workers - against hepatitis, against seasonal flu and the MMR vaccine. The most has been achieved in the vaccination against hepatitis, about 50 percent," said the prime minister.
