KPS operation in Kosovska Mitrovica: Rosu also arrives, explosions from stun grenades

An operation of the Kosovo police is currently underway in North Mitrovica, while citizens have gathered and blocked Kneza Milosa Street.

According to a Kosovo Online reporter, the Kosovo police, who came from South Mitrovica, broke into one of the city pharmacies.

The operation of the Kosovo police, during which they are using stun grenades and tear gas, is in progress, while several hundred citizens have blocked a number streets as sirens wail in the town; according to unofficial information, a similar operation is currently taking place in Zvecan as well.

Also according to unofficial information, the Kosovo police first raided one of the city pharmacies where they were checking Kosovo customs papers.

After that, people started gathering, expressing dissatisfaction with the said operation, while the situation escalated when the Kosovo police started throwing stun grenades and tear gas.

According to Kosovo Online, police operations are ongoing in several towns in the north, near North Mitrovica and in Zvecan; previously there was no confirmation on whether members of Rosu were also engaged, but members of the intervention police were.

Several explosions were heard during the operation, which are presumed to be from stun grenades.

Since the operation started, sirens have been constantly sounding in North Mitrovica, as the intersection near the Technical School is blocked.

Rosu also arrives in North Mitrovica, situation extremely tense

After members of the Kosovo police intervened against the gathered citizens with tear gas and stun grenades, members of Rosu arrived in North Mitrovica from the southern part of the city.

According to a Kosovo Online reporter, the situation was extremely tense on Wednesday morning.

Meanwhile, members of Rosu and the police retreated towards the east bridge in North Mitrovica, while the streets are full of citizens.

Kosovo police say their operation in the North is aimed against smuggling

The Kosovo police issued a statement saying that they "started police operations in the early morning hours in order to realize strategic goals of preventing criminal acts, especially in the fight against the smuggling of goods."

According to the statement, "operations are being carried out in the region of Pristina, Pec, South and North Mitrovica."

"All police operation are carried out in coordination with competent prosecutor's offices and courts, and refer to inspections and searches at various locations such as houses, residential, business premises, warehouses... As a result of intensive and professional actions of the Kosovo police and customs, so far, various goods have been seized, which serve as material evidence," the police stated.

The Kosovo police added that "in cooperation and coordination with competent authorities, they will continue to implement their duties and responsibilities at the national level, in order to prevent criminal activities, prevent the smuggling of goods and destroy criminal groups."
