After the meeting with the president of the Assembly of Serbia, Ivica Dacic, Speaker of the House of Representatives of Cyprus Annita Demetriou sent a message to the Serbian people that Cyprus will always stand with Serbia, reports Tanjug.

"I want to assure you that Cyprus will always stand with Serbia," Demetriou said in the National Assembly of Serbia and assessed that relations between the two countries are exceptional and can be further improved.

Stating that her first visits after getting elected as the speaker have been to Greece and Serbia, Demetriou said that these two countries are the greatest friends of Cyprus, particularly Serbia to which the struggle Cyprus is leading is clear because, as she said, Serbia is doing it itself.

"We must open new perspectives in the development of our relations and develop even better exceptional relations that already exist between our countries, improve inter-parliamentary and diplomatic communication and strengthen our voice and act together to protect international law," she told reporters in the Serbian Assembly.

Dacic said that Cyprus is Serbia's greatest friend in Europe, adding that this country has always been on Serbia's side and has had understanding for the problems Serbia faces in defending its sovereignty, just as Serbia has had understanding for the Cyprus issue. Dacic pointed out that Belgrade wants to improve bilateral relations, and that friendship should be nurtured no matter how much it is implied.

"We often have more contacts with those countries that do not understand us than with those who support us, so it's important to continue cooperation," said Dacic.

He noted that Cyprus has always been with Serbia and that, among other things, in the further development of relations, trade can be improved, which now amounts to around 60 million euros. Dacic told reporters that Speaker Demetriou would schedule a triple meeting between representatives of the parliaments of Cyprus, Serbia and Greece, adding that he was looking forward to further development of relations.

He announced that Demetriou would address deputies in the Assembly of Serbia on Tuesday during a special session, for which Demetriou expressed her gratitude.
