Vucic congratulates new German chancellor: "I look forward to future cooperation"

President of Serbia Aleksandar Vucic has congratulated the new German chancellor, Olaf Scholz, and said that he was looking forward to future cooperation.

"I am convinced that Germany will continue its policy of advocating for the preservation of the highest values of the EU, in which Serbia will continue to be its reliable partner. I look forward to future cooperation, so that we can work together for the benefit of all our citizens," the message reads.

Olaf Scholz has been elected the new Chancellor of Germany. 395 deputies voted for him.

Scholz needed at least 369 votes out of a total of 736 deputies in the German parliament.

Scholz should now receive a confirmation of appointment from German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier at his residence.

The president of the Bundestag, Berbel Bas, was scheduled to make official the beginning of the new session of the parliament at noon, during which Olaf Scholz is expected to take the oath.

Who is Olaf Scholz?

Scholz was born in Osnabruck in Lower Saxony. His father worked as a manager for textile companies, he grew up in a working class area in Hamburg.

He joined the SPD youth organization in high school and remained active in the party after moving to Hamburg-Alton, a workers' district known at the time as a hotbed of left-wing agitators.

At that time, he identified with the ideas of Marxism and, like many of his peers, was against US imperialism.

He completed his law studies and continued his career as a lawyer dealing with labor disputes, remaining an active member of the party.

Scholz became a member of the German Bundestag in 1998, and was two years later he elected as head of the SPD in Hamburg, the party's traditional stronghold.
