Largest colony of butterflies in Serbia lives in Jelasnica Gorge: Special plant species also grow here

14 kilometers from the city of Nis and three kilometers from Niska Banja (Nis Spa) is the Jelasnica Gorge, which connects the Nis valley with the settlement and tourist destination of Bojanine Vode.

The gorge is about two kilometers long and only 30 meters wide. Its altitude ranges from 293 to 580 meters.

In one part, between Zdravacki Kamen and Grdjenica, the gorge narrows to only seven meters, which is a special natural rarity in Serbia.

The Jelasnica Gorge is considered as one of the most romantic in the whole of southeastern Serbia - it is home to the largest colony of butterflies in our country.

This site is especially interesting for botanists - here grow ramonda nathaliae and Serbian ramonda, as well as sage, daphne blagayana, Serbian eastern pellitory-of-the-wall, hybrid blackberry and wild pear.

The Jelasnica Gorge has enjoyed the status of a nature park of the first category of protection since 1995.

At the same time, it is the first climbing site in Serbia dedicated solely to sports climbing, with 58 routes. Because of the orientation of the rocks and the microclimate, the best period for climbing is spring and fall - winter is extremely cold in the Jelasnica Gorge, and in summer, the temperatures are extremely high.
