After several days during which road maintenance workers fought against snowdrifts on the Preko Brdo-Odvracenica road, on the harsh Mt. Golija, that road is finally passable for traffic, while snow tunnels several meters high have formed. Favorable weather conditions are helping the workers, because there has been no new snowfall in the previous few days.

"This section is being cleared every day, there is heavy machinery on the ground and road workers who deal with huge amounts of snow every day. It is passable at the moment, but no one can guarantee that will be the case tonight. Therefore, as usual, we appeal on drivers not to be deceived by the fact that there is no snow now. Here the situation changes from hour to hour. Snow was not falling on Golija only in August, and the blizzards here are such that you literally cannot see a finger in front of your eyes," Vitomir Arsovic from the public company Putevi Ivanjice tells RINA.

During this winter season, there have been two operations to rescue snowed-in passengers in the section from Preko Brdo to Odvracenica. Although it has been paved, due to the configuration of the terrain, the section is extremely difficult during the winter months and is one of the most critical maintenance-wise. The road is located at an altitude of 1,700 meters and passes under Jankov Kamen, the highest peak on Golija.

"There is probably no road in Serbia that's more difficult to maintain than this one on Golija, a strong wind blowing from the Pester Plateau here in just a few minutes creates huge snowdrifts. So if you go through this section and the wind starts blowing, head back immediately. If you get stuck while calling the road service, it takes two hours to get to the top, which makes the whole situation quite a bit dramatic," says Arsovic.

The section is 12.5 kilometers long, and there are heavy machines and powerful loaders working on that route every day. Judging by the amount of snow, and weather conditions, they will be there until April.
