Danger of explosion in town with famous lakes: 7 tons of ammonia leaked from abandoned plant in Bela Crkva

An ammonia leak from the production system of an abandoned company in Bela Crkva, which was processing and canning fruits and vegetables, could have caused an ecological disaster.

The explosion was avoided by the timely reaction of all competent services, which are now controlling the situation, until an authorized company is hired to discharge the remaining quantities of the dangerous gas from the pipes, Novosti reports.

It is estimated that there were about 16 tons of ammonia the system, and that about seven tons have leaked.

"It was a matter of hours before this plant caused an environmental disaster affecting the whole of Bela Crkva. Even now there is danger of an explosion, because high temperatures increase the pressure of ammonia in the pipes. But firefighters and members of the emergency sector are there, who have blocked the plant and are keeping the matter under control," said a well informed source.

The ammonia leak happened because of old valves, which failed due to lack of maintenance since the company has not been working for six months, while the abandoned plant also has no guards. The locals have been complaining about an unbearable stench.
