Milanko Sekler, a virologist and microbiologist at the Veterinary Specialist Institute, assessed today that Serbia will see an increase in the number of infected people and that the number of positive cases per day will again reach around 20,000.

"There is nothing unusual about new strains spreading faster, that is true. So far, there is no indication that they cause a more severe clinical picture than the Omicron strains known so far," Sekler told TV Prva.

"There will be up to 15,000 and even 20,000 infected people per day, which is expected because new strains are much easier to transmit and thus spread faster."

Asked why people who have had coronavirus more than once, even those who have been vaccinated, get it again, he said that the flu also returns if we had it before, so that is not unusual for anyone.

"In December 2020, I said that the vaccine is not a magic wand and that we should not expect a miracle from the vaccine - it serves to make the disease easier."

According to him, individual immunity is important above all.

Asked if a new wave of coronavirus is coming, he said that he is not worried about the expected increase in new cases because the new strains of Omicron cause much milder forms of the disease. He added that he also understands why some countries, where the number of infected exceeds the numbers recorded during the previous wave, have not introduced special measures.

"That's individual, people should be responsible and know where they are going and whether they are vaccinated and if they are not vaccinated, they should not go to large gatherings. They have to get used to living in such circumstances. Those who have been vaccinated should also take care, but it must be known that there is little chance that the disease will become complicated for them," said Sekler.

Protection measures, he added, are largely down to individual responsibility, towards health and towards society.
