Vucic: Over 3,000 pieces of weapons handed in so far, more police officers to be hired urgently

President of Serbia Aleksandar Vucic said today that the presence of police officers has been ensured in schools in Serbia, and that so far over 3,000 pieces of weapons have been handed in.

"I just finished the meeting. Over 3,000 weapons have been handed in, tens of thousands of bullets of different calibers. That's good news," he told TV Pink.

Vucic stressed that he knew that many people would be angry because of this campaign (to turn in illegally held weapons), but it is important for Serbia.

"We ensured a large presence of police officers in schools, and the reactions are positive, both from the parents and the teachers. The teachers will now have greater rights, children will not be able to pull the chair from under them, behave brutishly and bully them," Vucic said, in reference to an earlier incident involving students and a a teacher, and announced immediate recruitment of new police officers.

"We will continue taking illegal weapons, and then we will analyze everything that is held legally," said Vucic.

He added people must continue to work, now even harder.

"You have to work, breathe, drink water. Today is not an easy day," he said.

The president also announced a big rally for May 26.

"Many on the political scene never understood the essence. For some, it will not be enough even to convene the (National) Assembly. They (opposition) announced a rally against violence. Then they put party officials in the front row. It was clear that none of the organizers were against violence," said Vucic.

"It's funny when you listen to their perception regarding the number of people. Like little kids," he said. There is something more serious, their reality shows are good and some others are not good, he added.

"They did not propose any measure related to improving the safety of teachers. Their demands are exclusively of a political nature," he said.

"They want my head," stressed the president.

Speaking about the rally on May 26, he said that "none of us will even think of blocking their homes, Gazela (bridge), or anything like that." He added that the rally on May 26 was duly registered while the other day they (opposition) blocked highways, harassed people, but that this will not be the case on May 26.

"Imagine on Friday when they block Gazela, as people are getting home, traveling... Well done maestros, you have succeeded in life. I don't know how (Miroslav) Lajcak will get here, maybe they will block the airport," Vucic said ironically.

"It is our duty to preserve peace and stability and to make further economic progress," he concluded.
