Serbia is the ninth in the world in terms of the number of inhabitants it loses (demographically) - every year a med-sized town "disappears." This is evident in statistical data, and in addition to the negative natural growth, the brain drain is also a big problem for Serbia, writes N1.

Topping the list is Ukraine, primarily because of the war raging there, and to this, it has "lost" almost three million people. Japan also had big losses of the same (demographic) nature - more than 650,000 people, followed by Russia (300,000). Italy, China, Lebanon, Bulgaria, Germany and Serbia come next down this list.

Serbia "loses" more than 72,000 people a year, which is the size of a mid-sized city in this country. This figure includes two data points - the negative birth rate, that is, the difference between the number of deaths and newborns, as well as the number of those who do exist, but have chosen to leave the country.

According to the Statistical Office, the negative birthrate amounts to about 46,000, while the rest of these fitures refers to the almost 30,000 people who have chosen to leave their country.

However, this report says that many factors warn that the number of people who leave the country annually is significantly higher than this, and could range between 45,000 and 60,000.

Also, the recent population census showed that from 2011 to 2022, Serbia "lost" almost half a million inhabitants. Experts warn that even those figures are not realistic, that the number is even higher, because the data on those who left the country is not precise.

The situation in the region is somewhat better, so Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia - which have smaller populations than Serbia - "lose" about 20,000 people annually.
