President of Serbia Aleksandar Vucic has offered his condolences after the death of former President of Uruguay Jose Mujica.

"It was with sincere sadness that I received the news of the death of the former president of Uruguay, Jose Mujica, a man who, with his life, actions and convictions, became a symbol of the fight for justice, equality and dignity of the common man.

I had the honor and privilege of meeting him during his visit to Belgrade in 2016, and that meeting left a strong impression on me. It is rare to meet a leader whose charisma rests on modesty, whose strength lies in simplicity, and whose political legacy transcends the borders of a single country.

Jose Mujica was a president who lived what he said, staying true until the end to the people he served. His commitment to the principles of social justice, solidarity and human closeness made him loved and respected far beyond the borders of Latin America.

On behalf of the citizens of the Republic of Serbia and on my own behalf, I express my deepest condolences to his family, friends and the people of Uruguay. Serbia remembers President Mujica as a true friend and a great man, whose legacy will remain a lasting inspiration to all who believe in politics serving the greater good," Vucic's message reads.

The former president of Uruguay, Jose "Pepe" Mujica, died on Tuesday aged 90.
