It was snowing this morning on the slopes of Mt. Zlatibor, turning mountain peaks there this mid-May as white as they get in January.

The snow covered Murtenica, Tornik and Cigota peaks, and was also falling on Mt. Zlatar.

During the night, the temperature dropped to around zero degrees Celsius, which contributed to the formation of a snow cover.

Locals say that weather surprises are not uncommon in mountainous regions, but they note that snow falling this late in the spring is a rarity.

"It would happened before in May, but in the last 10, 15 years we have not seen such scenes," say people in the villages near Murtenica.

Despite the May cold snap, mountain landscapes covered with "a white blanket" leave visitors feeling they are in a fairytale.
