President Aleksandar Vucic said today that he does not expect that to happen - but still hopes that the implementation of US sanctions against Petroleum Industry of Serbia (NIS) will be postponed.

He added that intensive work and lobbying is being done to this end.

"I don't expect it, but I hope we will get another month. We are working on it," Vucic told a journalist who asked whether he believes the decision on the exemption from US sanctions will be extended, given that the current deadline expires tomorrow.

The president added that the outcome will be known tonight or tomorrow.

Vucic pointed out earlier that the situation is very complex, taking into account geopolitical circumstances and the fact that a temporary exemption from sanctions has already been obtained several times, which allowed NIS to operate smoothly despite the fact that it is majority-owned by Russia's Gazprom Neft.

"I hope that reason will prevail, that they will recognize our specific circumstances and the position Serbia is in," said the president, adding that he is in touch with relevant international actors, and that he "hopes for the best, but is also preparing for other scenarios."

According to Vucic, the possible introduction of sanctions against NIS could have serious consequences for the energy market in Serbia, but also in the wider region, given the importance of that company that supplies oil derivatives.
