Serbian Defense Minister Bratislav Gasic met today in Belgrade with Assistant UN Secretary-General for Europe, Central Asia and the Americas Miroslav Jenca.

Gasic noted during the meeting that Serbia contributes to the protection of international law, primarily through engagement in peacekeeping operations, and that in this way, cooperation with the United Nations is being constantly improved.

According to a Ministry of Defense statement, Gasic pointed out that in the previous period, through promises of new contributions made at ministerial meetings dedicated to peace missions held in Ghana and Germany, Serbia confirmed its commitment to strengthening peace efforts around the world.

The minister recalled that according to UN Security Council Resolution 1244, the only (military) force that is allowed to be present in Kosovo and Metohija is KFOR, and that KFOR is the guarantor of peace and security of the Serb population in the southern Serbian province.

It was pointed out during the meeting that the presence and activities of UNMIK, together with KFOR, are extremely important for ensuring the safety of the Serb and other non-Albanian people and that it is necessary for the said mission to continue in Kosovo and Metohija.

Miroslav Jenca expressed his gratitude to Serbia for its commitment to the promotion of peace and dialogue, as well as to preserving stability in the region.

He also stressed that the contribution of our country to peacekeeping operations is highly appreciated and recognized in the international community and that he expects Serbia will continue to do so, especially when it comes to the participation of the Serbian Army personnel in multinational operations.
