Serbian cabinet minister Darko Glisic, who suffered a massive stroke this morning, has had surgery and is now intubated.

Health Minister Zlatibor Loncar spoke from the Emergency Center in Belgrade about his colleague's current condition, and the fight to save his life:

"Two blood vessels were damaged, a large one which was completely blocked and a smaller one. Preparations (for surgery) were done quickly, he was brought into the OR, the procedure was complex and lasted longer than is usual," Loncar said, adding that Glisic is still in a very serious condition.

"He is still in intensive care, on a ventilator," the minister added.

"What could have been done has been done, the goal was to eliminate the problems that led to this situation. Now it is up to his body to compensate and to rehabilitate the affected parts of the brain. A serious fight is ahead," Loncar stressed.

He explained that success rate is higher when such interventions are done as soon as possible, and that was the case here.

"Please, don't ask me about any prognosis, we have to fight hour by hour." Minister Loncar said.

Darko Glisic was taken ill this morning while he was appearing live on TV Pink, after which he was rushed to the Emergency Center.

The diagnostic procedure started within 20 minutes, which is crucial for successful recovery from a stroke.

In addition to his family, President of Serbia Aleksandar Vucic was in the hospital this morning. Many officials and Glisic's political associates sent him messages of support.
