Minister Djuric announces: I suggested Trump should visit Serbia, we can bring relations to previous level

Minister of Foreign Affairs of Serbia Marko Djuric yesterday in Washington met with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

A number of topics were on the agenda - from strategic partnership between Serbia and the United States, to the position of the Serb people in Kosovo and Metohija, and the situation related to the president of the Serb Republic, Milorad Dodik.

Djuric today told RTS that it has been agreed to hold a strategic dialogue between the two countries and that he hoped that relations between Belgrade and Washington would "return to the level they were at the time of our ancestors."

After meeting with Marco Rubio, Marko Djuric said that it was historic.

"The tone of the conversation was extraordinary and gives me many reasons for optimism, considering that this is a continuation of the positive tone between Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic and US President Donald Trump during the first time they spoke right after Trump was re-elected." Djuric told RTS.

He added that the positive framework was further made concrete during the meeting with Rubio.

"A strategic dialogue has been agreed that includes a number of topics - such as economy, energy, defense, culture, state visits and all other topics that can improve our cooperation and return diplomatic relations to the level they were at the time of some of our ancestors," said the minister.

Djuric noted that the Embassy of Serbia in Washington is also to be credited for the fact that the Serbian delegation was received with great respect at the State Department.

"I jokingly said that this was 'a summit of two Markos (Marcos)', but I wasn't joking when I suggested that President Trump should visit our country, which would be the first visit of a US president to Belgrade and Serbia in 40 years. The door for that is wide open," Djuric concluded.
