Constitutive session of Assembly in Pristina interrupted yet again, another Self-Determination candidate fails

The constitutive session of the provisional institution's Assembly in Pristina was put on pause once again today, after the candidate proposed by the Self-Determination party, Hekuran Murati, failed to receive enough votes to be elected the as the Assembly president.
Out of 115 deputies present, 57 voted for Murati, 52 were against, while six abstained.
The session is scheduled to continue on August 24.
This was the second time the constitutive session resumed after the Constitutional Court in Pristina on August 19 ordered the deputies to elect Assembly's president and vice president, in a public vote, within 30 days.
The court also said that one candidate can only be proposed only three times and that all deputies must participate in the session and vote.
The Self-Determination, which won the most seats in the election held last winter, first picked Albulena Hahxiu, who previously served as Assembly president, but in she never received more than 57 out of the 61 votes needed.
The same party then proposed Donika Gervala, but she did not get enough votes either.
The constitutive session of the Pristina Assembly started back on April 15, and by July 26, it had resumed and suspended a total of 54 times.
Since Self-Determination's original candidate Haxhiu never received the required number of votes, the party attempted to change the tactics starting in early May, demanding that the vote be secret - which the majority kept rejecting.
Parliamentary elections were held in Kosovo and Metohija on February 9, 2025.
Self-Determination won 48 Assembly seats, the Democratic Party of Kosovo 24, the Democratic League of Kosovo 20, the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo and the Nisma initiative eight each, the Serb List nine, the Party for Freedom, Justice and Survival one, while the remaining 10 mandates went to other non-majority communities.
