Van driver seriously injured, 7 boys undergoing surgery: Details about crash that claimed life of teen athlete

S.S., born in 1982, has been admitted to the Emergency Center of the University Clinical Center of Vojvodina early this morning with multiple traumatic injuries sustained in a crash, the Clinical Center of Vojvodina (KVC) told Tanjug.

"At the time of this reporting, after a complete diagnostics and medical assistance has been provide, the patient is being observed in the Emergency Center," the Clinical Center of Vojvodina stated.

The accident happened this morning around 04:30 on the highway between Belgrade and Novi Sad. A 16-year-old boy has been killed, while seven others have been transported to the Children's Hospital.

The accident happened when the van, which was transporting the children, drove off the road, breaking through the fence and falling into a canal.

According to information available so far that has been announced by the Ministry of Internal Affairs, for as yet unknown reasons the Opel van with Belgrade license plates, driven by S.S., overturned and crashed.

There were eight minor passengers aged between 13 to 16 in the vehicle, members of the judo club Partizan from Belgrade, who were returning from an international sports camp and competition in Azerbaijan.

A breathalyzer test determined that the driver of the van was not under the influence of alcohol.

An investigation is underway at the scene, by order of the competent public prosecutor.
