Northern Kosovska Mitrovica, Leposavic and Zubin Potok withdraw from Association of Kosovo Municipalities
The assemblies of the municipalities of northern Kosovska Mitrovica (North Mitrovica), Leposavic, and Zubin Potok confirmed on Friday the decision to withdraw from the Association of Kosovo Municipalities.
Their previous decisions to leave this body were contested by the provisional Pristina authorities' Ministry of Local Self-Government.
The four municipalities in the north of Kosovo and Metohija, where Serbs make up the majority of the population, became part of that association while the heads of the local self-governments were Albanian mayors, elected in April 2023 in a vote that the Serbs boycotted because of Pristina making unilateral moves and not respecting agreements reached in the past.
During that time, street names were changed in those municipalities, Serb institutions were evicted from their buildings, signs with names of settlements written in Cyrillic were removed and replaced by names in Albanian first, and then then in Serbian, but transliterated to the Latin alphabet, and often with typos.
