The Emergency Situations HQ of Serbia met today at the initiative of PM Djuro Macut to assess the current hydrological and meteorological situation, the consequences of the historically low water level of the Danube River, as well as adopt measures to mitigate the impact of the announced prolonged heatwave.

The meeting was chaired by Deputy PM, Interior Minister and head of the HQ Ivica Dacic, and special attention was paid to possible serious consequences on the water supply, the functioning of the Danube-Tisa-Danube hydro system, agriculture, the economy, energy security, as well as the increased risk of wildfires.

Members of the HQ were informed about the activities undertaken by the competent institutions so far, as well as with further measures that must be implemented. In accordance with the conclusions of the session held on July 30, the Emergency Situations Sector of the Ministry of Internal Affairs will from August 4 organize daily meetings of operational headquarters to coordinate activities in dealing with heatwaves, in the event of a drought, lack of drinking water or wildfires.

Strong appeal to citizens and industry

The Emergency Situations HQ has appealed on citizens, local governments, the economy and all others to save electricity and water and consume it in a responsible manner, especially when it comes to water used for irrigation, in order to ensure the stable functioning of the water supply system, energy system and other vital systems.

Conclusions related to the continuation of the monitoring of the situation in the territory of the province of Vojvodina have been adopted, and appropriate recommendations have been issued.

Once again, it has been ordered to make available all material, technical and human capacities from all entities that can contribute to mitigating the consequences. In addition, increased monitoring of the condition of watercourses and surface waters is required, with strong participation of the public water management enterprise Srbijavode, and the Commodity Reserves Directorate .

The HQ will continue to monitor the situation and, in cooperation with competent authorities and institutions, take all necessary measures to protect the lives and health of citizens, preserve critical infrastructure and mitigate the consequences of these unfavorable conditions.
