Vucic announces that elections will be called in Serbia in a few days or weeks
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said today that early elections will be called "in a few days or weeks" and added that the nervousness among the opposition will increase as they approach.
Asked to comment on election result predictions circulated among the opposition and opposition-leaning media, which do not go in Vucic's favor, he said that the nervousness in those ranks is increasing as elections approach.
"In the last ten days, they released four or five different surveys and semi-surveys containing what suits them. The nervousness is great and I know why. Their nervousness will be ever greater because the day is approaching when we will find out the truth. And when there is no more, 'this happened, that happened', no more after that. People will have their say," Vucic told reporters at the Palace of Serbia on Thursday.
He also referred to a poll published on the Savremena Politika portal, which was reported by N1, according to which 49 percent of respondents believe that things in Serbia are moving in a bad direction, while 41 percent believe that they are moving in a good direction, and added, "they wrote all the numbers, they just didn't publish where political options in Serbia stand."
"They gave you everything. I'm not going into that methodology now, whether it's really 49-41 in, since we have different data. And for the first time, they didn't work with Ipsos, but with some nonsense agency. That's not very important either. Why didn't they give you those numbers (about electoral list ratings)? Just ask them. Let them give you those numbers. How much does the 'Aleksandar Vucic' list have, how much does the 'Student List' have? Ask them, not me. And you will see: they gave you everything except that," said Vucic.
According to him, the surveys serve him to change and improve himself, while the others use them "to fix their lack of self-confidence".
He repeated that he is fully prepared to congratulate his opponents in case of defeat and added that there is a different approach between him and others.
"I am ready to condemn an attack on any person, regardless of their political orientation, they never are. I am ready to congratulate them if they win the election, of course they are not ready to congratulate me. How are they going to explain why they lied to people all the time that they are winning the election? How are they going to explain that, (by saying) that all those people in the polls lied? They will have to say, 'this election was this and that, because we didn't win again'. So yes, their nervousness will be increasing, they will spread that nervousness in all directions, while it's up to us to do the work," said Vucic.
Asked if US President Donald Trump sharing on social media a few days ago a video from the Belgrade Arena - where a banner reading, "President Trump, welcome to Serbia" was seen in the stands - is a signal that he could visit Serbia, Vucic said it is realistic to expect visits at the highest level between Serbia and the US only after elections in Serbia, which, he said, will be called "in a few days or weeks".
"It's not realistic for a visit to tkae place now. Soon, in a few days or weeks, elections will be announced, and in America you have the midterm elections as well, so only when all that is done, then it's realistic to expect a visit at the highest level between our countries," said Vucic.
