First victim of wildfires in Serbia: One person dies, most critical location is Deliblato Sands
The Sector for Emergency Situations carried out a total of 201 interventions in Serbia yesterday, of which 146 were to put out wildfires that killed one person, said the assistant head of the Directorate for Firefighting and Rescue Units of the Sector for Emergency Situations (SVS) Davor Vidovic.
He told RTS that the situation was most critical in Deliblato Sands (Deliblatska Pescara), where the fire has engulfed 3,500 hectares of forest and low vegetation.
Vidovic stated that since the beginning of the year, SVS had 24,000 interventions and that half of them were fires in open spaces, in which four persons perished.
45 active wildfires in Serbia
There are 45 active fires in Serbia, and some have been localized and extinguished near Bujanovac, Bojnik, Bovansko Jezero, Ub, while the situation is still the most difficult in Deliblato Sands and on Mt. Stolovi near Kraljevo.
The rain that fell during the night did not help the situation, as strong wind is igniting the hotspots again this morning, reports RTS.
More than 3,500 hectares have been engulfed by fire in Deliblato Sands, and on Mt. Stolovi the challenge for the fire services is the inaccessible and rocky terrain.
The firefighting and rescue teams from the Sector for Emergency Situations and members of other competent authorities continued their activities to extinguish and contain the fire in Deliblato Sands, where the situation is further aggravated by the configuration of the terrain and strong wind.
More than 330 members from various services are deployed there.
