The plane carrying the body of Ratko Mladic has landed in Serbia.

Along with Mladic repatriated from The Hague on the plane were his son Darko Mladic, granddaughter Anastasija, Serbian Minister of Justice Nenad Vujic, and two wartime comrades of General Mladic.

The coffin taking Mladic's body home was covered with two flags - the Republic of Serbia, and the Republic of Srpska (Serb Republic, RS, the Serb entity in Bosnia and Herzegovina, BiH).

A large number of police officers were at the location as well as media from our country, and from abroad.

Earlier today, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic confirmed that the body of General Ratko Mladic had been retrieved, and that it would arrive in Serbia in the late afternoon of this day.

Ratko Mladic, the former commander of the Army of the RS (VRS) was sentenced to life imprisonment by a tribunal set up in The Hague. He passed away on August 27 at the age of 84.

Mladic's death was preceded by several strokes and a serious deterioration of his health, which was reported weeks before the tragic outcome. His family's requests to be granted treatment in Serbia due to his impaired health were not accepted.

In The Hague, he was serving a life sentence after being convicted of war crimes. He spent the last 15 years of his life behind bars, starting with his arrest on May 26, 2011, in the village of Lazarevo near Zrenjanin, Serbia.
