Vucic: I am sure KFOR will protect security of residents in Kosovo and Metohija, we must preserve peace

President of Serbia Aleksandar Vucic says that the threats made on Saturday in Pristina, Skopje and Tirana during rallies in support of the leaders of the so-called KLA ("Kosovo Liberation Army") - held before their sentencing in The Hague - are nothing new, that this was expected, and that he is sure that KFOR will preserve the safety and security of Serbs in Kosovo and Metohija.

After the Serbian Army's joint tactical exercise Pobednik 2026 held on Pester, Vucic was asked whether the sentencing in The Hague of the leaders of the so-called The KLA could affect security, not only of the Serbs in the southern province, but also security in the region in general. He replied that he received assurances in the exchange of letters with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte that KFOR will preserve safety and security of residents in Kosovo and Metohija.

"I don't think that either the Europeans or the Americans are comfortable with or that they want to see any kind of violence. As for what we saw yesterday, and those threats, we are accustomed to that and we expected that," Vucic said on Sunday.

He added that he hopes that the guarantees he received countless times regarding the survival of the Serb people will be respected.

"What they will do, I really don't know. Maybe a better question is, 'what should we believe if on Tuesday the verdict is they are not guilty for the suffering of those dozens of civilians cited in the indictment?' We have to preserve peace and stability, but at least it will be clear to us what they did to us politically," said Vucic.

The verdict against the former leaders of the so-called KLA will be announced on September 16 by the Specialist Chambers in The Hague. The prosecution requested that they each be sentenced to 45 years in prison.

Hashim Thaci, Kadri Veseli, Jakup Krasniqi and Rexhep Selimi stood trial on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity.
