The building of this church, which was built in the Gothic style, was first built as a Protestant chapel in 1850, and the Serbian people who wanted to have their church in USA had bought in 1942 for $ 30,000.
Yet until 1944, when the last dollar was paid off for the purchase of this church where there were no mass service, and the first was held on 11 June 1944, and this temple was declared the first Serbian Orthodox Cathedral in the United States.
In the postwar period this building was a refuge for Serbian emigrants, who have constantly upgraded it, and this church was the only place where Serbs were able to meet, keep their faith and identity.
In the sixties this temple is named by the US authorities as one of the most important Orthodox holy shrines in the US, and in 1968 was declared a monument under the protection of the city.

For clarification, The First Serbian Orthodox Church in America was and still is Saint Sava in Jackson,California, built in 1894. The New York Temple is technically NOT a Church per se, it is a Cathedral. A Cathedral is differentiated from a Church by the fact that it houses a Bishop. Which explains the Bishop's throne, which is not present in regular "church's".
