Epidemiologist and member of Serbia's coronavirus Crisis HQ Predrag Kon said today that the situation regarding the epidemic in Serbia is improving because the number of new cases and the number of patients in intensive care is decreasing, but that it is still not completely favorable, because the number of deaths is still high.

Kon said that it is not visible at the moment what would disrupt the decline in the numbers in the next two weeks, stating that a further decline in the number of new cases is sure to continue.

"The question mark is only around Omicron, because it takes time for it to be discovered. It has been registered in 60 countries, which shows an enviable potential, and which means that in time it will cover the whole world," Kon told TV Pink.

According to him, some countries are introducing new measures in order to prevent a sudden increase in new cases.

"Our situation is good, we did not have a jump in schools, and nothing can be seen until a more serious number of people arrive from an area where it is present," he said.

Kon expects Omicron to probably arrive in Serbia at the end of December.

Speaking about the fourth dose of the vaccine, he stressed that the question is whether that vaccine is for the elderly, and those at risk, or for all citizens, and added that studies will show that in the end.

"The third dose is important, especially when it comes to the Omicron strain. It enhances antibodies and protects cellular immunity," Kon explained.
