The US embassy in Pristina said that although the United States supports the aspirations of self-proclaimed Kosovo to join NATO, the requirements for that membership are complex, reports Lajmi.

"As an unwavering partner of Kosovo, the United States is committed to helping Kosovo take its rightful place next to its neighbors in European and Euro-Atlantic institutions," said a written response the embassy sent to the Pristina newspaper.

The embassy also said that "the United States welcomes Kosovo's aspirations for NATO membership" but stressesd that "membership application is complex and requires a long-term and thoughtful approach."

The statement points out that Washington continues to support the Kosovo Security Force (KSF), which is said to have made "significant progress in its ten-year transition plan, which was developed with US support."

"Kosovo can best show its readiness for the obligations of NATO membership by continuing to actively implement this ten-year transition plan," the US embassy added in its reply, according to Lajmi.
