Brnabic: Serbia adheres to international law as a matter of principle
President of the Serbian National Assembly Ana Brnabic said last night that Serbia has been one of only a handful of countries around the world that adhered to public international law as a matter of principle when it comes to the arrest of President of Venezuela Nicolas Maduro, but stated at the same time that Serbia must preserve and foster its relations with the United States.
"We, at least in the last decade or so while Serbia has been led by Aleksandar Vucic, have always supported international public law in principle, so I think we are the only or among a very few countries in the world that have adhered to public international law in principle, regardless of the circumstances, regardless of the specifics of a case, or anything else," Brnabic told TV Pink.
She stated that respect for the United Nations Charter and international public law seems incomprehensibly hypocritical today - that there are people who were leaders and champions of protecting the fake state of Kosovo, but are now referencing the United Nations Charter and international law.
In response to comments that such a stance "could come back to bite (Serbia)" and that Donald Trump "is not someone who can be said to leave such things to chance," Brnabic said that she believes having principles can never "come back to bite one."
"Thus far that has protected us from many things that happened in the last decade, which were extremely difficult for us. How? Well, because we always had arguments to defend ourselves. Did that sometimes make our overall situation easier?, well not necessarily, but no one could argue against us, since we truly adhere to international public law," said Brnabic.
Brnabic assessed that referring to international law will be more necessary and present in countries that have smaller territory and realize they now have a huge problem.
"When there is no international public law in one case, as there was none when it comes to the Republic of Serbia, then the same can easily happen in five, 10 or 15 years, that this same lack of principles turns against (others), as is happening now," said Brnabic.
Speaking about relations with the US, Brnabic stressed that Serbia must preserve and foster those, and see through strategic dialogue how to overcome some of the problems that exist and are certainly not unique to Serbia.
