Drecun: US wants Serbia to be its most important partner in the region

Chair of the Committee on Defense and Internal Affairs in the National Assembly of Serbia Milovan Drecun commented on the beginning of the strategic dialogue between Serbia and the United States to say that the US is unequivocally showing that Serbia is of exceptional importance for its policy and interests in Southeast Europe.

Drecun told Tanjug that this does not only apply to the region of the Western Balkans, but also beyond.

"They consider Serbia to be the most important country and they have finally gained trust in Serbia. Serbia has an independent policy, makes independent decisions, is militarily neutral, but it is a partner. And what does it mean to be a partner? The way Kurti behaves, you say one thing, agree on one thing, then he does something else? No. Here, the continuity of a policy is demonstrated. You know what our red lines are. You know that we will not join any military alliance. You know that we conduct an independent policy, that we will not recognize Kosovo," Drecun said.

He assessed that the strategic dialogue clearly shows that the US wants Serbia to be its main partner in the Balkans and South-Eastern Europe, and that is why this is viewed with great suspicion in Croatia, Sarajevo, and Pristina.

According to Drecun, the US wants Serbia to be their most important partner in the region, and there are great opportunities for American companies to invest here, which is safe because the country's political stability is unquestionable.

"It's very important that Serbia plays the role of an energy hub that will lead to the diversification of the region's energy supply. Djerdap 3 is extremely important. Look at the 5G network. Exim bank, the American, gave a loan of 50 million. We provide guarantees, that the 5G network will be set up in a way that would make it impossible for some other company that would provide, say, that technology, to use it, abuse it for some other purposes, which are either of an intelligence nature or simply of a subversive nature. So, they really want to do something that would make it impossible for competing forces to exercise their political influence here, through that technology, through energy sources," said Drecun.

He added that it will only become obvious in the coming period how significant Serbia's dialogue with the US is.

Drecun also said that the motion for a no confidence vote against the government in the Serbian Assembly initially stemmed from a "constructed hybrid Operation Generalstab" by the opposition, whose goal was to prevent the business positioning of US President Trump's family business, and assessed that this operation was constructed by someone from the outside.

He said that the broader geopolitical context was not only to stop Serbia's moving closer to the Trump administration, but to stop the strategic dialogue, even back then.

"But President Vucic undertook a series of brilliant foreign policy moves. Among other things, those interviews he gave, which Trump published on his social network, and the diplomatic activity that took place. We also used parliamentary diplomacy. We used all means available. And the president managed to cancel out what some wanted to achieve," Drecun stated.

He added that those are some people in Europe and also some from the deep state in the US, which can be seen in the financing of NGOs that participated in the hybrid operation called Generalstab, which, he said, is not based on facts and truth, but is blatant deception.

Drecun pointed out that Vucic managed to neutralize all that and that the strategic dialogue with the US has been launched.
