Albania was hit yesterday by two strong earthquakes of 6.4 and 6.5 magnitude. According to the latest information, 27 people have been killed, while a large number of homes and buildings have been destroyed.

Rescuers continue to search the ruins looking for survivors. Albania now ranks third in the number of earthquake victims worldwide this year.

It is not yet known how many people are trapped beneath the rubble, and rescuers hope to find only survivors.

However, as time goes on, they fear that the death toll will increase.

Yesterday's earthquake in Albania is the third largest in the world this year casualty-wise.

Only those that hit Indonesia and Pakistan have been more deadly, the media reported.

As the list shows, Indonesia tops the casualty list. The September 25 magnitude 6.5 earthquake there killed 41 people.

Pakistan ranks second, where a 5.6 magnitude earthquake that hit the country on September 24 killed 40 people.

Earthquakes in Indonesia and Pakistan have been described as "very strong" and those in Albania as "severe".
