The prime minister of so-called Kosovo, Avdullah Hoti, has asked for works on the Decani-Plav road, which passes through the area of the medieval Serbian Orthodox monastery Visoki Decani that has been legally declared a protected zone, to be suspended.

The government said in a statement that Avdullah Hoti appreciates the vital importance of this road for citizens, but that the legislation adopted by the Kosovo Assembly is in force, as well as a decision of the Kosovo Constitutional Court.

It is further stated that knowing the direct impact of that road on the economy and quality of life of the inhabitants of the municipality of Decani, Hoti "supports the review of all legal and practical possibilities in the field in order to complete the road connecting Kosovo with Montenegro."

Hoti "reiterates full commitment of the Kosovo government and people to preserve and respect sacred buildings as a common value of Kosovo's rich spiritual heritage," the statement added.

At Hoti's request, and after several days of appeals and requests from the monks of Visoki Decani, the Diocese of Raska and Prizren, and President of Serbia Aleksandar Vucic - Decani Mayor Baski Ramosaj announced on Saturday that construction works on this road had been suspended until Monday.

The Diocese of Raska and Prizren warned that illegal works on the Decani-Plav road going through the protected zone of the monastery continued, despite the explicit ban on building main and transit roads through special zones.

Due to the passage of a large number of heavy construction vehicles on a daily basis, it is possible that static damage has already been done to the buildings of this 14th century church and monastery.
