The director of the Batut Institute for Public Health, Verica Jovanovic, says that the daily increase in the number of confirmed Covid patients indicates that the epidemiological situation in Serbia is still unstable and that a spike in new cases can be expected.

"Currently, the only way to stop this increase in the number of infected people is to wear masks, avoid gatherings and apply other measures," Jovanovic told TV Pink.

She stressed that in addition to treating infected people, it is important to act preventively and to stop the further spread of the virus.

She noted that it is important that those who develop fever stay at home, isolate themselves, monitor their condition and if it gets worse, seek help at the nearest Covid clinic.

"With the increase in the number of cases, the number of patients in hospitals is growing. A number of patients are in a serious condition, and the number of deaths is also growing," she stated.

It is rare, but it happens that in a family of four, two members of the household get infected, while two do not. Jovanovic explains that getting infected has to do with the immunity of each person, and that science will answer in the future whether there are genetic predispositions for getting the virus.

More than 50 percent of citizens suspected of having Covid who come to the Batut Institute for PCR testing, say that they have lost their sense of taste and smell as the first sign of infection.

"Patients should know that recovery takes a long time and certain tastes and smells take longer to regenerate. It's uncomfortable for patients, it creates additional stress," she explained.

Jovanovic appealed on citizens to wear masks indoors, and to wear them properly - by covering both the mouth and the nose, but also to regularly ventilate indoor spaces.
