Hit on social networks: New Serbian ambassador to Angola takes over dressed in traditional costume

While taking over the duty of the ambassador of Serbia to Angola, Milos Perisic became a real hit on social networks due to a detail from the ceremony itself.

Perisic arrived at the reception where he handed over his accreditation to President Joao Goncalves Lourenco dressed in traditional Serbian folk costume, including the hat and shoes (sajkaca and opanci, in Serbian) - and wearing a face mask (because of Covid).

The move provoked an avalanche of comments, with people divided on whether the decision was the right one.

It is common among African diplomats to promote their tradition and costumes during official visits to other countries, so it could be that our ambassador wanted to represent Serbia in the same way.

It's not known whether Perisic also consulted the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Serbia when choosing his outfit. So far, our MFA has not reacted.

Prior to his service in Angola, Perisic was charge d'affaires of the Serbian Embassy in the United Arab Emirates, and before that he served in Baghdad.

Not the first diplomat from the Balkans to promote his country in this way

However, Perisic is not the first diplomat from the Balkans who thought of representing his country in this way - something similar was done in early 2019 by Bulgarian Ambassador to India Eleonora Dimitrova, where she also appeared wearing her country's traditional costume when she was first introduced to Indian officials.
