Teenager A.M., who was supposed to turn 18 next month but passed away today after she was hit by a train, was returning home from school when the accident happened. She was attending the Economics High School in Nis.

A.M. was hit by the train as she was crossing the track in a place with no level crossing. According to eyewitnesses, she did not hear the train was coming because she wore earphones.

"Despite the great efforts by the doctors to save this young life, the patient passed away due to the severity of the injuries she sustained in the traffic accident," the Clinical Center in Nis announced.

According to Nebojsa Mladenovic, an eyewitness of the accident, he first heard the train's horn.

"The train was passing around 11:20 am, I was chopping some wood there, and suddenly I heard the train horn sound over and over. I looked and saw the train stopping. I saw a girl lying on the tracks. I approached, people come out, saying, 'Don't touch her!' I saw that she was alive, that she was breathing. An ambulance came after 20 minutes, I don't know what else to tell you," said Mladenovic.

The company Serbian Railway Infrastructure expressed sadness over the unfortunate event and appealed on all participants in traffic to respect the rules.

"Upon entering the railway station Cele Kula in Nis, a passenger train that was traveling from Nis to Dimitrovgrad hit an unknown female person on the track (outside the station). According to information from the field, this was a girl who was crossing the track on the open railway in a place where that is prohibited," the company said in a statement.

The police conducted an investigation of the scene of the accident, informing the prosecutor's office. It is suspected that the cause of the accident was lack of attention, because the girl allegedly had earphones on as she was crossing the track.
