Since the beginning of this year, 26 women have been killed by their husbands or partners. Since the beginning of the implementation of the Law on Prevention of Domestic Violence, more than 166,000 cases of domestic violence have been considered, more than 60,000 urgent measures have been adopted to issue restraining orders and remove perpetrators from the family and almost 52,000 individual protection plans have been developed, but that is not enough, unless we all get involved in the fight against violence.

Serbian Deputy Prime Minister and President of the Coordination Body for Gender Equality Professor Dr. Zorana Mihajlovic reminded of this data.

She also mentioned today that it is devastating that in the previous two days there were several cases of domestic violence in which two women were killed, one husband tried to kill his wife, while one woman and her daughter were physically attacked by their husband and father.

"In just two days, as far as we know, five women became victims of violence, two of them lost their lives. This is not normal and it is worthy of every condemnation. Each crisis, even this one caused by coronavirus, raises numerous problems and creates cracks that affect the whole society. As much as there is a need to avoid social contacts, accumulated anger and frustration, existential fear - no reason justifies raising a hand to a woman!," she said.

This year so far we have had 26 murdered women, she pointed out.

"If we intend to fight violence and replace the gloomy statistics with a society without violence, for the better future of our children, then we cannot rely only on laws. Women are not reporting violence out of fear or shame. We, as neighbors, friends and relatives, think that violence is a private matter, why should we interfere, and then we have such dark outcomes. Let's change that together," she concluded.

If you suffer violence or know someone who does, call the SOS hotline at 0800-35 00 36.
