"Nobody wants 2010 to repeat, when torrent took away Drina River House": The symbol resists

The water level on the River Drina in the territory of the municipality of Bajina Basta, compared to last night, has been reduced to a water flow of 1,900 cubic meters per second. A new rise in the water level on the river is expected when Lake Perucac once again releases water.

"There is no risk of floods and overflows that would endanger households. The only buildings in danger are those that have not been legalized and that are built on the very bank of the Drina. There is no damage to legalized facilities. For now, the situation is under control. The water that entered buildings yesterday is slowly receding," Vesna Djuric, president of the municipality of Bajina Basta, told RINA.

The biggest tourist attraction of Bajina Basta, the so-called "Drina River House" which is set on a rock in the middle of the river, was also hit by a large amount of water. The locals took the necessary precautions in time to reduce the impact of the flood wave.

"A 'wall' has been opened on the house and it withstood, it is still successfully resisting the Drina and we hope that it will remain so because it is a kind of symbol of our municipality and a place that is visited by tens of thousands of people annually. Nobody wants the situation from 2010 repeat, when the torrent swept away the house," said Vesna Djuric.

Water levels rose on the Drina due to the opening of the dam at the Perucac hydro power plant, because it was necessary to ensure that the lake can receive a wave coming from Montenegro along the rivers Piva and Tara, which make up the Drina River.
