"Hamburek" is a culinary wonder that everyone's talking about: We went to Bor because of it

A gourmet wonder from a small town in Serbia has become the focus of attention in the past few days.

Although "burek with pljeskavica" (pljeskavica is a type of burger typical of Serbian cuisine, while burek is a kind of baked filled pastry) is being served in Bor for over ten years, the whole of Serbia learned about this thanks to a photo.

In order to find out more about this specialty, we left Belgrade en route to Bor.

We were greeted by the author of the picture, David Katanic, in front of the Kosuta Bakery where this gourmet magic is taking place.

As he says, he did not expect the photo of a "hamburek" (a play on words on "hamburger" and "burek") to go viral. And it all started when he sent it to a friend in order to convince him that the thing really exists.

"The friend is the one who posted the photo on Twitter. It then 'exploded', no one expected that," David told us.

We were interested to learn how it's possible that "burek with pljeskavica" has existed for so many years, but that people are hearing about it only now.

"Well, to be honest, I don't know. Probably because it's not something that the bakery has on the menu or in the price list officially, instead they meet the demands of customers who stop by and want a pljeskavica inside a burek," said David.

He explained that "hamburek" is not the only thing that sets this bakery apart from others. Namely, they are willing to put whatever the customer can think of as a side dish with their bureks, so you can order a burek with ajvar and other toppings.

Otherwise, "hamburek" came to be quite spontaneously, more than a decade ago. The youth of that time, returning home from a night out, would stop at Kosuta. It occurred to one of them to order a pljeskavica inside a slice of burek - and the rest is history.
